Where to From Here?

In this moment of crisis, all people of goodwill need to come together to defend our democracy.

If and when Donald Trump starts to try mass deportations of immigrants, we’ll need to surround their homes and protect them.

If and when Donald Trump tries to block Muslims from coming to this country, we’ll need to get into the streets and close down business as usual.

If and when Donald Trump tries to take away health coverage for people with preexisting conditions, we’ll need to do sit-ins in the office of every Republican elected official.

If and when Donald Trump nominates a Supreme Court justice who vows to overturn Roe v. Wade¸ we’ll need to pressure every Democrat to filibuster.

If and when Donald Trump cracks down on free speech and protest, we’ll need to speak out and protest all the more.

In the meantime, we need to build institutions of resistance in our workplaces, communities, and our houses of worship.

In the meantime, we need to talk to our neighbors who don’t agree with us. We need to understand their fears and anxieties and frustrations, and their deepest hopes for themselves, their children, and our country. And we need to make the case to them that the Trump Road is not the road to go down.

In the meantime, we need to find authentic candidates who can speak to these concerns and aspirations of everyday Americans, and concretely show them that a progressive path is the better path.

In the meantime, we need to call out the racism and the sexism that Trump has now made respectable again.

In the meantime, we need to press forward with demands for a living wage and for paid sick leave and for paid maternity and paternity leave.

In the meantime, we need to press forward with demands to get off fossil fuels and to fight climate change.

In the meantime, we need to press forward with demands to amend the Constitution to say that corporations aren’t persons and money isn’t speech.

All of this work begins today. Tomorrow may be too late.
