Feingold Outspent 5-to-1 by Outside Groups
November 4, 2016
Political spending by outside groups in the race for the U.S. Senate is lopsided in favor of Sen. Ron Johnson.
In fact, pro-Johnson groups are outspending groups that support Russ Feingold by 5.7-to-1, according to the website Open Secrets, using data as of Nov. 2.
Pro-Johnson groups have ponied up about $11,171,000 while ones favoring Feingold have tossed in $1,965,000.
The largest groups supporting Johnson are:
Freedom Partners Action Fund, a Koch Brothers’ group, which has spent $2,836,000;
Reform America PAC, founded by Terry Kohler of Wisconsin, which has spent $2,486,000.
Club for Growth and Club for Growth Action, which have spent $1,542,000.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has spent $1,350,000.
The largest groups supporting Feingold are:
The League of Conservation Voters: $498,000
Environmental Defense Fund $468,000
Humane Society $399,000
Planned Parenthood Votes $135,000
The discrepancy in outside group spending is likely to grow even wider, as Americans for Prosperity just announced a $950,000 buy and the National Republican Senatorial Committee just announced a $1 million buy.
As far as direct contributions to the candidates’ own election committees, Feingold has brought in $21,477,000 and Johnson has brought in $19,230,000, according to Open Secrets.
